HP All-in-One, Fax, and Copier Products - 'Turn Power Off then On' Message Displays on the Control Panel

Issue

The error message 'Turn Power Off then On' displays on the product control panel.

This document applies to the 'Turn Power Off then On' message only. If you receive a different message, try searching again for another document that addresses the exact message you see.

Solution one: Turn the product off and then on again

Follow these steps to resolve the error message. It might not be necessary to complete all of the steps to fix the issue.

Step one: Disconnect all data cables and devices from the product

  1. Disconnect any USB, Ethernet, or parallel cables from the rear of the product.

    caution:

    Do not disconnect the power cord during this step.

  2. Remove any memory cards or USB drives you have inserted into the product.

Step two: Turn the product off and then on

  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.

  2. Wait 15 seconds.

  3. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  4. Check the display for the error message.

  • If the error message does not display, skip to the step to reconnect the data cables and devices.

  • If the error message displays again, skip to the solution to check the power connections.

  • If a different error message displays, continue to the next step.

Step three: Reset the product

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  3. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to the printer.

  6. Turn the printer on.

  • If the error message does not display, proceed to the next step to reconnect the data cables and devices.

  • If the error message displays again, skip to the solution to check the power connections.

  • If a different error message displays, search for another document that addresses the exact message you see.

Step four: Reconnect the data cables and devices

  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.

  2. Reconnect one USB, Ethernet, or parallel cable to the rear of the product.

  3. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  4. Check the display for the error message.

  • If the error message does not display, reconnect another cable, and then repeat steps 2 through 4.

  • If the error message displays, replace the cable you just reconnected with a new one. Go to the How to Buy HP page to buy the replacement power supply for your product.

Solution two: Check the power connections

Follow these steps in the order provided to make sure that the power connections between the product and the power source are secure.

Step one: Determine if the product uses a power cord or a power module as the power supply

If the power supply is a cord with electrical connections at each end, the product uses a power cord.

If the power supply is a cord connected to a module or box, the product uses a power module. The power module might have a permanently attached power cord, or the power cord might detach from the power module. The term power module refers to both the power module and the power cord.

IMPORTANT If the product uses a power module, make sure that the power module part number is the same as the part number listed in the User Guide to make sure that you have the correct power module.

  • If the power module part numbers match, continue to the next step.

  • If the power module part numbers do not match, replace the power module. Go to the How to Buy HP page to purchase the replacement power module for your product.

Step two: Check the electrical connections and wall outlet

Click the Plus sign () next to the type of power connector your product uses, and then follow the instructions to check the electrical connections.

Step three: Relocate the power cord or power module to another room

Click the Plus sign () next to the type of power connector your product uses, and then follow the instructions to relocate the power cord or power module.

Step four: Replace the power cord or power module

Go to the How to Buy HP page, and then follow the on-screen instructions to order a replacement power supply for your product.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the product

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
